Biography

Dr Kate Booth graduated from the University of Manchester in 1985 with a joint degree in Physics and Geology and obtained her PhD in Physics from the same university in 1988.  Since then she has been a Lecturer in physics at the University of Salford and, following a change in career direction working as a Technical Trainer in Microsoft operating systems for a training company in Manchester is currently a Senior Lecturer in Computer Networking at the University of Salford.  She is a member of the Computer Network and Telecommunications Research group and her technical research interests are focused on issues relating to security in wireless sensor networks.  She also is an active participant in initiatives to promote increased interest and participation in STEM and is or has been a co-investigator on grants to promote public engagement and to exam issues surrounding the participation and progression of under-represented groups in SET degrees and occupations.  She has also studied the effects of applying Active Learning to undergraduate modules. She is currently the Widening Participation co-ordinator for the School of Computing Science and Engineering, with responsibilities that include the organisation of, and participation in, the School’s Enrichment event for local colleges and Summer Schools for local GCSE students.  She also provides activities for the INSIGHT programme and has been involved with SETPOINT Greater Manchester in the creation and delivery of activity sessions to schools in the Manchester and its surrounding areas.
